This updated version incorporates the following new, important features:
Unattended Scheduled Captures
Distinct Network Monitor version 5.1 now includes a scheduler that allows you to run a scheduled collection of network traffic statistics or packet captures. With the new scheduling feature, you no longer have to remember to start and stop Distinct Network Monitor when you are trying to build a constant record of traffic during specific time periods. Just set the parameters you wish, like a special filter and schedule the monitor to start and stop at any given time. For example, you could run a daily capture from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm or you could start a capture at any time of night without needing to be present.
Continuous Captures of Netwok Statistics
If you are collecting only the network statistics, then a new database file will even be automatically opened when no more data can be written to the first one. With Network Monitor automatically doing all the capturing for you, all that is left is for you to run the reports needed by management to monitor network activity and these too can be scheduled. The combination of Distinct Network Monitor and its ReportBuilder allows automated network traffic monitoring and reporting letting you concentrate on other areas of network management.

Enhanced Capture Driver and Enhanced Parsing Capabilities
Distinct Network Monitor version 5 has an enhanced capture driver as well as the ability to scroll through very large capture files extremely fast. In addition, DNM now allows users to fine tune buffer sizes to optimize performance for their particular system and environment.
Distinct Network Monitor now supports searching through captured packets while a capture is still active, making it even easier to track down live problems in real time.
New Packet Generator
A new packet editor and generator has been included for software developers and network administrators who need to test and debug the processing of custom packets on their networks.
Enhanced Network Statistics Module with New ReportBuilder for Better Network Management
Distinct Network Monitor version 5 saves all statistical data to an Access database to optimize real time capture operation as well as network traffic analysis . In addition, DNM includes a separate report building application which allows administrators to generate different views of the statistics observed on their networks. The level of detail in these reports is much greater than what was previously available, and because the statistics are now saved to a database, analysis and reports of network statistics can be obtained over much longer periods of time.
In addition to built-in report templates, the new ReportBuilder allows you to create your own custom templates tailored to your specific needs. Reports include bandwidth calculations for IP traffic as well as all network traffic, IP applications, IP traffic by system, detailed reports for HTTP and FTP traffic and many more.
ReportBuilder incorporates its own scheduling engine which allows you to conveniently generate reports overnight or at specific intervals. Reports can be run on live captures as well as previously completed captures. With these reports, and by monitoring the traffic on the mirror port on your switch, you can now make very detailed assessments on network bandwidth usage, while being able to monitor the type of traffic along with the systems and protocols which are generating it.
Because statistics captures can now be left running continuously, the display of live statistics has been streamlined to show only the current traffic within a configurable timeframe of 15 minutes to 2 hours. This real time analysis of your network traffic allows you to focus on up to the minute traffic statistics and changes rather than looking at useless long term averages.
Additional Tools
Some additional tools have been added as well. Among them is a utility application which can detect and analyze the systems which are currently active on your network and identify available server types such as FTP, SMTP or HTTP.
